The text Rom 9:5 is referred to as crux interpretum in exegetical studies and is considered one of the most difficult exegetical passages in the Letter to the Romans. In the history of exegesis, various ways of interpreting the eulogy in Rom 9:5c have been proposed. In contemporary exegesis, the debate is primarily whether the eulogy is to be applied to Christ or to God. It has to be acknowledged that the interpretation of Rom 9:5c remains a difficult question to solve. Several points of view speak for the fact that ὁ ὢν does not refer back to ὁ Χριστός in Rom 9:5b but introduces a new sentence...

This article offers an analysis of the depiction of the growing up of the child Jesus in the Infancy Gospel of Thomas (IGT). IGT describes the divine Jesus consecutively at the ages of five, seven, eight, and twelve and outlines his gradual maturation. While the five-year-old Jesus displays impulsivity and infantility, his behavior changes for the better as he grows older. This transformation is based on the central programmatic theses that Jesus has to learn “to bless and not to curse” (Gs 4:2) and to love those his own age and have respect for elders (Gs 6:2). The depiction of Jesus‘ childhood in the IGT is contextualized against...

When Pope Pius IX defined the dogma of the Immaculate Conception of the Virgin Mary in 1854, he ended a theological debate on this question centuries long. The well-known Medieval Franciscan thinker John Duns Scotus offered one of the most important theological contributions to defend the Immaculate Conception of the Virgin Mary. Because of the universality of Christ’s redemptive work and the universality of original sin, the opposite opinion prevailed among theologians during his life. The aim of this paper is to examine Scotus’s solution to this Marian question in the context of the Medieval debate on it. First, the most serious theological...

Exile ecumenism arose unintentionally as part of cooperation on secular projects of the exile community and was thus saved by ecclesiastical self-centeredness. Ecumenical meetings, dealing with strictly controversial theological topics, remained episodic. The issue of the common resistance of Catholic and evangelical Christians in socialist Czechoslovakia and the issue of human rights and freedoms in general held an important place.

The rapid changes in the style of communication in the media over the last three decades have been enormous. Technological progress and the development of communication channels are constantly changing the ways in which authorities and communities are interconnected. In the paper, the authors examine the approach of the last three Popes to the new possibilities of communication through the Internet. This survey study traces how John Paul II, Benedict XVI, and Francis anticipated the consequences of technological possibilities and social change in society in their texts and how their ideas manifested themselves in the public media space. The call for...

Feminist theology of liberation, as well as other directions of liberation theologies, aims in its arguments at accentuating the values of relationship and reciprocity at the level of creation, while strictly defining gender, social, political and environmental inequalities. The starting point of their egalitarian approach is, in particular, the personality and actions of Jesus Christ, in which they find inspiration for contemporary society, especially with regard to help and solidarity and a genuine interest in the suffering and needy. This interest is also reflected in the so-called mystic of suffering Dorothee Sölle, whose position...

Open theism is known for its greater logical precision, its notion of an all-perfect personal and temporal God, and its resulting ‘risky’ theodicy. In discussions on the logical argument from evil, the world-order and the value of free moral agency have become crucial. One of the necessary elements of moral life is the existence of particular physical and moral evils for which there cannot be a greater particular good to justify them. Particularly problematic are the horrendous evils from which the limits of the general rationalist approach emerged. The advantage of open theism is that where other concepts resort to mystery, theological...

The starting point of this study is even the still appearing accusations of satanism directed at Free Masons. In the two first parts of the study, the authors focus on the appearance of the words “Satan” and “satanism” in the internal periodicals of Czechoslovak Free Masons during the period of the First Republic. These appearances are nearly always merely a defense against such accusations, often coming from the secular press. In the third part, the authors discuss various organisations which at first might look like Free Masons, but in fact have no connection with regular Free Masons. In these cases, certain forms of satanism...
