This study arises from the question as to how present‑day pastoration should grow closer to the modern family, how to read what a family experiences generally (pastoration principles) and how to respond to specific situations (pastoration imperatives). The study answers this basic question as follows: What does the requirement of completely new pastoral competence in regular church ministry of a family mean in comparison with the past? The study answers with several theses: a) abandon the institutionalized and canonically formalized manners that the Church formulated theoretically and practically 150 years ago as the only possible means; b)...

The article, whose title is based on the designation of the Second Divine Person by St. Thomas Aquinas, begins with the application of the principle distinguer pour unir for the synchronic distinction and unity of theology and spiritual life. After an elucidation of the concept of theology and spiritual life, it tracts the harmony between both of them, based on the straight unity between the reason and the will generally and particularly in the act of faith. Since the relationship between theology and spiritual life is mutual, the article continues with a treatise on the relationship between theology and spiritual life, summarized in the expression...

The Catholic Church has been observing the cultural changes in society of the twenty and twenty-first centuries and attempting to reformulate its relationship towards non-Christian religions. Discussion over the question as to whether Christians and Muslims believe and acknowledge the same God has also impacted the Czech theological scene. The paper is presented as a contribution to the discussion. The main source is a letter of Pope Gregory VII to a certain Muslim ruler where he formulated the sentence qui unum Deum, licet diverso modo, credimus et confitemur. The quotation is interpreted in the context of contemporary discussions. The paradigm for...

The paper deals with research on Vladimír Boublík's view of the historical Jesus according to his recently published and not quite finished work Alla ricerca di Gesù di Nazareth (Research on Jesus from Nazareth). The third chapter of this work entitled Il Gesù storico e il Cristo della fede (The Historical Jesus and the Christ of Faith) is presented in the paper and briefly commented on. Boublík carries out his research from the point of view of Fundamental Theology, focusing on the credibility of Jesus' words and miracles according to the records of the Gospels, taking into account the effect of the paschal events. Boublík's work is based...

One of the important questions concerning the theological virtue of charity is the order of charity. It is a simple problem of the succession in the expression of charity in relation to various people. It is obvious that we are obliged to love all people, but they have a different grade of perfection and dignity. It is also impossible to express our charity to all people in the same way and in the same intensity, because our time, strengths and means are limited. This is why the question of order in our expression of charity is so important. The beginning of our considerations on the order of charity deal with the celebrated verse from Gal 6:10, which...

According to the Decree on the Sacraments of the Council of Trent, one of the effects of frequent receiving of the Holy Communion is perpetua sanitas mentis, perpetual sanity of mind. The article demonstrates that these words echo a text, which the authors of the decree associated with Saint Cyprian of Carthage († 258), whereas its real author was the monk Ernaldus Bonaevallis († after 1159). It demonstrates that the theme of mental recovery through communion with Christ was present in the theology of the Church Fathers and in the liturgical prayer of the Church, and that the theologians and preachers of the twelfth century, including Ernaldus...

St George Jackson Mivart (1827–1900) became famous in the Catholic Church mainly because of his theory that the human body emerged as a product of evolution, whereas the human soul was given to the first man by God. The aim of this article is to discuss Mivart’s position in ethics. It deals with the controversies Mivart had with Darwinists on various topics: natural selection, the morality of animals and “savages”, and last, but not least, eugenics. It points out that in his critique of Charles Darwin, Mivart was occasionally more focused on the opinions of Thomas Henry Huxley, Herbert Spencer and George Darwin.

The paper focuses on the astronomical interests of one of most well-known fi-gures of the end of the tenth century Gerbert of Reims (ca. 940/50–1003; a monk in Aurillac, scholasticus in Reims, abbot in Bobbio, illegitimate archbishop of Reims, archbishop of Ravenna and Pope Sylvester II). The paper analyses two of Gerbert’s letters. The first of them (De sphaera addressed to Constantine of Fleury) was probably written around the year 980 and presents the construction and setting of the unique observation hemisphere. The second letter (to brother Adam) was written during the spring of 989. It deals with timekeeping and includes practical...

The contribution seeks to disclose and evaluate the position of the concept of 'truth' with the apostle Paul. The term ἀλήθεια, whose primary meaning is 'truth', occurs in Paul’s undisputed letters only 22 times. Because the most frequent occurrence is in 2 Corinthians and Romans (8 times in each), it is apparent that Paul’s usage of this term increased over time and the apostle used it not only in connection with love and as the opposite of wrongdoing (cf. 1 Cor 13:6 and Rom 1:18; 2:8), but also saw God (cf. Rom 1:25; 3:7; 15:8) and Christ (cf. 2 Cor 11:10; Rom 9:1) as present in it. Although 'truth'...

Religious practice in the Czechoslovak Republic was characterised by increasing heterogeneity, reflecting the national, social, political, confessional and world‑view orientation of the Czechoslovak people. In the decade which followed 1918, the issues of religion and confession were frequently raised in public discourse. The topics discussed also included the flourishing Czech sectarian scene, including spiritism and the spiritist movement, an affinity to which was shown by thousands of organised followers, sympathisers or people who were simply curious. This paper deals with the spiritist movement during its inter‑war heyday in the...

Richard Schaeffler is a contemporary German Christian philosopher, who is currently developing a new kind of transcendental philosophy. The paper focuses on the way he pursues thinking about God who, in his view, can be understood as "the freedom that sets one free". Schaeffler believes the designation is acceptable for both religion and philosophy. He is convinced that one can postulate a personal God philosophically in a post‑Kantian, revised version of transcendental philosophy. Religious experience demonstrates what is being postulated philosophically. The philosophical concept of God is therefore not empty, but instead answers the experience...

The Masoretic version of Isa 28:1,3 speaks of the “drunkards of Ephraim”, while the Septuagint version mentions the “hirelings of Ephraim”. On the one hand, the difference can be easily explained: unvocalized שכרי אפרים enables a reading here of a word related to שׁכר (to be drunk) as well as to שׂכר (to hire). On the other hand, the scholarly discussion seems to ignore a quite surprising fact that the Greek translator decided to choose the less fitting interpretation of שכרי, considering the context...
