One of the most significant appeals that Pope Francis has brought to the life of the Catholic Church is the call for a synodal transformation of the Church. Such a concept of the Church is closely related to what “catholicity” means as a characteristic of the Church. The article, therefore, analyses selected documents of the Second Vatican Council dealing with the catholicity of the Church and analyses the catholicity of the Church based on the synodal concept of the Church (the Church as communio ecclesiarum). The methodology of a “transversal reading” of conciliar documents shows the not‑yet‑fulfilled potential...

The text of 2 Cor 5:14, which is part of Paul’s apologia for his apostolic ministry (2 Cor. 2:14–7:4), contains a beautiful summary of Paul’s devotion and highlights the universal significance of Jesus’ death. The underlying motive of his apostolic ministry is the love of Christ, which not only influences and guides his actions but also provides him with an inner impetus and motivation (5:14a). The fact that Paul is completely controlled by Christ’s love is the result of his having come to a personal conviction of the significance of his death (5:14b). To express the depth and reach of Christ’s love, Paul uses the...

This paper examines friendship in the correspondence of Alcuin of York in the broader context of the development of concepts of friendship in the Latin West. The fundamental dimensions of friendship in Alcuin’s work are identified, as well as the relationship between them. These are specifically the spiritual, philosophical‑ethical and political dimensions. In addition, elements of the author’s own emotionality can be perceived in Alcuin’s correspondence. The sources of Alcuin’s concept of friendship are to be sought primarily in the patristic tradition.

In the period of the Early Middle Ages, the institution of the so‑called purgatory oath, set in accordance with traditional rules of German criminal law, was commonly applied in the secular forums. It predominated in certain countries, whereas in others it “only” supplemented other proper evidence, especially several types of ordeals or in various ways treated testimonies. Its essence consisted in the swearing of a suspicious person before the deity on his or her innocence in a specified term and attended by a defined number of compurgators. This transcendental aspect had to appeal to the conscience of the swearer with fear of the...

The ecclesiastical dignitary Jakob Ernst von Lichtenstein‑Castelcorno (1690–1747) successively served as Bishop in Seckau, Styria (1728–1738) and Olomouc, Moravia (1738–1745). He completed his career as Archbishop of Salzburg (1745–1747). He was very active in pastoral work, which was central to all his episcopal ministries, in all three positions. He was also willing to work in other dioceses when necessary. During his trip to the spa in Trenčianské Teplice (today’s Slovakia), he, for example, consecrated a church in the territory of the Kingdom of Hungary. As the resident Bishop, Ernst Jakob reserved for himself...

The article presents the approach of Catholic journalism towards cultural, social and political issues as can be found in Catholic periodicals from the years 1945‒1948. One of the main characteristics of this approach is its focus on personal human dignity and its connection to the fact of the creation and redemption of the human person. Personal dignity forms an opposition towards the reductive approach of modern ideologies, which are understood as an instrumental construction of humanity leading to the limitation of the uniqueness and richness of human life. The critique of ideology is not anchored in an unambiguous left‑ or right‑wing...

The study deals with the analysis of paradox as a form of theological thinking in an older text by J.B. Souček. It compares the text with more recent works on the subject. Souček draws on the paradoxes of the New Testament, especially the paradox of the cross in Paul the Apostle, and sees in it the structure of the entire Christian message (which he conceived ethically). More recent studies do not offer such an overall synthesis, but analyze the paradox of Christianity on the sub‑topics of biblical, systematic and fundamental theology. It is apparent that the expectations placed by the theology of the 1920s in the form of paradox were exaggerated,...

The article seeks to address the importance of the spiritual dimension in people suffering from dementia (especially Alzheimer’s disease). Fulfilling spiritual needs is crucial for the good clinical condition of patients with Alzheimer’s disease. There are scholarly studies that show that different pastoral approaches, that focus on meeting the spiritual needs of the sick person, can improve the quality of life for people in early, mild, and even advanced stages of dementia. The article also highlights the theological and anthropological dimensions of the life of those suffering from dementia. It seeks to capture the implications of the...

The aim of this article is to present and contrast various competing concepts of the common good. In the first part of the article, I critically discuss the minimalistic concept, which can be found in the celebrated book A Theory of Justice written by the American philosopher John Rawls. I subsequently deal with the instrumentalist concept, which brought fame to John Finnis, the most prominent representative of the so-called new natural law theory. According to Finnis, the common good serves as an instrument regarding the basic human goods of marriage and family life. In the third part, the instrumentalist concept is the target of my criticism, which...
