Přestavby babylonské věže: Gn 11,1–9 v moderních českých parafrázích

Rebuilding the Tower of Babel: Contemporary Czech Paraphrases of Gen 11:1–9

Adam Mackerle

Studia Theologica 2022, 24(4):1-22 | DOI: 10.5507/sth.2022.0531492

Gen 11:1–9 contains three levels of meanings: phonetic-semantic (focused on the city of Babylon), contextual (explaining the existence of many languages and the dispersion of humankind), and moral (what provoked God’s reaction?). If we analyse the extant ancient Jewish and early Christian paraphrases and interpretations (including LXX and Vulgate), we realise that while the moral meaning of the original Hebrew text is questionable, vague, and ambiguous, it becomes the prevalent meaning in the subsequent tradition. Finally, the study shows that the modern Czech paraphrases (unlike modern translations) are not based primarily on the Hebrew,...

Je vhodné říkat křesťanskému pohoštění agapé? Hody lásky v Klementově Alexandrii

Is it Appropriate to Call a Christian Feast an Agape? Love Feast in Clement‘s Alexandria

Veronika Černušková

Studia Theologica 2022, 24(4):23-42 | DOI: 10.5507/sth.2022.0391612

We can obtain a vivid picture of the feasts held in his ecclesiastical community, called agape, from the works of Clement of Alexandria. The aim of this article is to present this information of Clement‘s in a contemporary context and explain why Clement himself rejects the popular designation of these feasts by the term agape, love.

The Ecumenical Document From Conflict to Communion (2013) in Light of the Development of the Catholic Church’s Approach to Luther and his Reformation Movement

Ľubomír Žák

Studia Theologica 2022, 24(4):43-65 | DOI: 10.5507/sth.2022.0591283

The article offers an analytical reflection on the ecumenical document From Conflict to Communion. Lutheran-Catholic Common Commemoration of the Reformation in 2017. It specifically addresses how the person, theology, and Reformation work of Martin Luther are presented in the document. This reflection also extends to addressing the question of whether and to what extent this presentation corresponds to past and present Roman Catholic views of the Reformer and the Wittenberg Reformation, as expressed through the opinions of the institutional leaders of the Roman Catholic Church. The author concludes that despite the positive results of...

Matthias Joseph Scheeben a česká katolická dogmatická teologie: Obecný úvod a období 1861‒1918

Matthias Joseph Scheeben and Czech Catholic Theology: General Introduction and the Period 1861–1918

Veronika Řeháková

Studia Theologica 2022, 24(4):67-89 | DOI: 10.5507/sth.2022.0541264

The study aims to clarify how widespread and to what depth Scheeben’s dogmatic-theologian legacy affected Czech Catholic Theologians between the years 1861 and 1918. The research indicates that there was a wide awareness of both the person and the work of the German Professor among clergy as well as laity. We name nearly thirty authors who quoted Scheeben’s books. The accentuated themes were Trinitarian Theology, Mariology, the relationship between God and the creation, and the Holy Spirit and grace.

„Setkání“ a „vycházení“: Dva koncepty papeže Františka vhodné pro missio církve v dnešní době

“Encounter” and “Going Forth”: Key Missionary Concepts of Pope Francis

Pavel Ženíšek

Studia Theologica 2022, 24(4):91-108 | DOI: 10.5507/sth.2022.0401322

Pope Francis’ ecclesiological and anthropological views of the Church and of the Christian mission are very much present in his Magisterium. When speaking of the mission (missio) of today’s Church – a holy and faithful people of God – he uses two significant terms to describe such a perspective: “encounter” and “going forth”. The Church of Jesus Christ encounters, meets with ’the other’, who are different to listen to them, to enter into dialogue with them, bringing about change in both partners of this dialogue. To be able to enter into the dynamics of encounter and dialogue, every...

The Media as a Gift: Relecture of the Pastoral Instruction Communio et Progressio

Petr Vizina

Studia Theologica 2022, 24(4):109-130 | DOI: 10.5507/sth.2022.0412640

This paper is an attempt to re-read the 1971 pastoral instruction on the media, Communio et progressio, in the context of the digital structural transformation of the public and the encyclical Fratelli tutti (2020). The Pastoral Instruction is considered a key text on the Church’s relationship with the media. The thesis recalls the document’s continuity with the social teaching of the Church. It attempts to capture the transformation that the Church’s relationship with the media has undergone from Communio et progressio to the present day, with particular reference to the encyclical Fratelli tutti, in which Pope Francis emphasises...

Prison Spiritual Ministry in the Focus of Pastoral Theology

Michal Opatrný

Studia Theologica 2022, 24(4):131-150 | DOI: 10.5507/sth.2022.0521464

The study responds to the lack of theological reflection on prison spiritual ministry in Czechia. Although the Czech Republic has a well-developed ecumenical prison ministry of chaplains, its operations are primarily of interest in the sociology of religion and penitentiary sociology. The reflection in pastoral or practical theology is significantly weaker. Thus, this study aims to describe the essential elements for the first theological conceptualisation of the prison spiritual ministry in the Czech Republic. It is based on the analysis of the current discourse in the sociology of religion, penitentiary sociology, pastoral theology, and partially...

Sixtinská kaple ve filmu Dva papežové

The Sistine Chapel in The Two Popes

Jan Černík

Studia Theologica 2022, 24(4):151-173 | DOI: 10.5507/sth.2022.0381222

The Sistine Chapel is the most significant location in The Two Popes, both in terms of the space where the most important scenes take place and in terms of the paintings on its walls. The aim of this paper is to explore the ways in which the Sistine Chapel is used as part of the film form. Like any formal element, the Sistine Chapel performs some functions in relation to how the narrative is conveyed to the audience. In each section of this paper, I progress from the initial impression the viewer gets when watching the film to the individual shots. The result is an understanding of the film-making techniques that have been used to strip the...

Patrik Griger

Studia Theologica 2022, 24(4):175-189 | DOI: 10.5507/sth.2022.0311273

The work Slovak Coup, which maps the events associated with the end of the First World War in Slovak realities, is one of the key works of Karol Anton Medvecky, who was an important political, ecclesiastical and cultural figure in Slovak society in the first third of the twentieth century. As secretary of the Slovak National Council and a signatory of the Martin Declaration, he was an important participant in the groundbreaking events of 1918. In this paper, we discuss some selected aspects of the origin and significance of Mevecky’s work, such as the social background, the author’s aim, the reaction in the political battles of the interwar...

Svobodní zednáři v dokumentech katolické církve 1878‒1983 (1985): Od konfliktu k dialogu

Free Masons in Documents of the Catholic Church 1878‒1983 (1985): From Conflict to Dialogue

Ctirad Václav Pospíšil, Veronika Řeháková

Studia Theologica 2022, 24(4):191-213 | DOI: 10.5507/sth.2022.0261332

The authors of the study present the evolution of the relationship of the Catholic Church with Free Masons during the period 1878‒1983. The pontificate of Leo XIII was characterised by an acute confrontation. This is testified to by many documents of this Pope who accused the Free Masons of enmity toward the Church, of pantheism, relativism, syncretism and dishonouring basic truths of the Christian faith. The Pope sometimes used apocalyptic-like vocabulary (the synagogue of Satan). This does not amount to, however, accusations of satanism. In papal pronouncements during the twentieth century, the issue of Free Masonry markedly recedes...
