The Letter of James is the most puzzling book of the New Testament, as it contains a number of enigmatic places. One of these places is James 2:18, which has been called the crux interpretum and which is rated as one of the most difficult places in the New Testament. The exegetical explanations of James 2:18 are manifold and not one of these explanations entirely satisfies. Our verse is part of the textual unit James 2:18‒20, which attempts to clarify that works, are a sign of faith. To clarify this fact, James uses arguments that are dialogical in nature. First, he introduces the topic: “Let’s admit that someone would...

The study deals with the specific common iconography of the Four Great Western Church Fathers in the Czech Middle Ages in the wider ecclesiastical historical context. Development of the cult of the Four Great Western Church Fathers, St. Ambrose, St. Augustine of Hippo, St. Jerome and St. Gregory the Great, arrived after the year 1295, when Pope Boniface VIII proclaimed them to the Doctors of the Church. The visual depictions of the Church Fathers on art monuments became a visible expression of this artificially created cult. Fourteen common depictions of the Church Fathers from the middle of the fourteenth century to the beginning of the sixteenth...

The article begins with a brief description of the development of the cult of Saint Joseph and a doctrine that maturated in the work of Jean Gerson (1363‒1429) and the Dominican friar Isidoro Isolani (ca. 1477/1484‒ca. 1528). It subsequently tracts the life of Isidoro Isolani and the outline of his work. It consequently focuses on Isolani’s most famous work, i.e. Summa de donis sancti Ioseph (1522), which is the first theological treatise on Saint Joseph. It discusses its origin, sources, content, speculative-affective character, prophetic elements and editions. An evaluation of the Summa is indicated in the conclusion. Although...

This paper focuses on a new method of fundamental ecclesiology. A call for a renewed method in this field has found its roots not only in the event of the Second Vatican Council but also in the ecumenical movement, in the historical consciousness and in a new shape of presenting the Church as a "faith space". Therefore, in the paper, I will first attempt to demonstrate the limits of a "controversial theology" and its method of defending the Catholic Church. Then I discuss how progress in the field of the philosophy of knowledge undermined a rethinking of method in ecclesiology. Finally, I propose certain principles for a renewed method of fundamental...

The aim of this article is to evaluate quasi-religious elements in humanist psychology with a special focus on Erich Fromm, Abraham Maslow and Carl Rogers. The study analyses concepts which may be denoted as a secularized "humanist theology". It refers to the fact that the authors of those concepts were originally connected with the Jewish or Christian faith and after their apostasy radically reinterpreted it or replaced it with a new religion. The humanist "cult of self-worship" explicitly or implicitly locates godhood into man and at the same time excludes the possibility of a personal relationship between man and God. The rise of this new religiosity...

This article deals with the phenomenon of new ecclesial movements, especially from the perspective of ecclesiology and spiritual theology. It is based on both, theological literature and the author’s own field research. Apart from an analysis of key elements such as the charisma and spirituality of the movements, the article reflects on one of the most important aspects — the lay character of the movements. The study thus presents new ecclesial movements as one of the manifestations of the prophetic dimension of the Church and one of the fruits of Vatican II. The text also pays attention to certain problems related to the pastoral activities...

The author focuses on human dignity and the instrumentalization of human beings in a propaedeutic manner. From a general point of view and from discussions with selected philosophers, this paper seeks basic answers to several questions: How do we understand the concept of "human dignity"? What is human dignity? How do we recognize human dignity? The problem of the instrumentalization of human beings stands out on the basis of a deeper understanding of human dignity, and vice versa. The author comments on, complements and clarifies the discourse on the instrumentalization of human beings and applies the acquired knowledge to the question of possible...

The authors focus on an internal periodical of the Czech Free Masons from 1925 till 1932, i.e. until the year of Hitler’s taking over power in Germany. They find that the relationship of the Free Masons to T. G. Masaryk was gradually being intensified. While the periodical never mentioned him over the period 1925‒1927, from the following year on, occurrences of his name and expressions of honour towards him increased in number and in intensity. From the year 1931 onwards, his title "Mason without Apron" became official. Czech Free Masons also accepted Masaryk’s religious legacy which was contrary to what the majority in the society held.
