When discussing the subject of the resurrection of the dead in 1 Corinthians 15, the Apostle Paul alludes to a practice of the Corinthian Christians that he had heard about. This is baptism for the dead. This isolated reference by Paul in 1 Cor. 15:29, which is expressed with insufficient clarity, has led to many interpretive proposals in the history of exegesis. The closest explanation seems to be a vicarious (vicariate) baptism, which members of the church community received for those who died unbaptized, so that these dead might receive the saving effect of baptism. We cannot entirely rule out, however, the possibility that some people were baptized...

The study is published on the 1,700 anniversary of the First Ecumenical Council. The author introduces the reader to the issue on a historical and theological level. It presents the nine main protagonists and attempts to reconstruct the proceedings in the council hall. This first study is a preparation for the following one, in which the author wants to deal with problems connected with the Council’s creed and its relevance for today’s Christians.

Benedict XVI’s speech to the members of the Roman Curia in 2005 on the “hermeneutics of reform” sparked new interest in the theological interpretation of the Second Vatican Council (1962‒1965) in the Catholic Church. The main purpose of the text is to present the most significant interpretive currents of the 21st Ecumenical Council in the last twenty years, which emerge as a critical evaluation and appropriation of the call for a “hermeneutic of reform”. The article further explores the topic of the reception of the Second Vatican Council, especially concerning the generative (creative) reception of...

The article reflects on the possibilities of celebrating the liturgy of reconciliation of the entire Church community. The Roman Ordo Paenitentiae contains two forms of community celebration of the Liturgy of Reconciliation. It is a liturgically and theologically justified and appropriate form of sacramental reconciliation. Through the historical development and practice of individual local churches, I would like to evaluate the meaning and benefit of celebrating the community celebration of the Liturgy of Reconciliation. This question is still relevant, as evidenced by the celebration of this form of reconciliation during the COVID-19 pandemic....

The present article deals with the role of Western monasticism in the Early Middle Ages, namely with peregrinatio and stabilitas and their practice during the process of Christianization. One of the critical concepts of the Benedictine tradition, which shaped the culture of the continent, is stability. This concept can be grasped in different ways. For the purpose of Christian mission, which radiated from the monasteries ruled by the Rule of Benedict, the vow of stability cannot be understood as a lifelong and isolated dwelling within one place. The concept needs to be understood in a more flexible way. Boniface was familiar with...

The focal point of this paper is the question of Teresa of Avila’s influence on the first generations of the reformed (discalced) Carmelites, especially on the intellectual and spiritual level. This question has not been sufficiently explored in the secondary sources. The paper follows two lines. The first part introduces selected Carmelite authors and the character of the relevant works in order to indicate the influence and respect Teresa enjoyed. The latter is underlined by the words of praise and epitomes found in the studied texts. The second part focuses on several selected topics (contemplation, mystical knowledge and inchoate beatitude)...

The aim of this study is to introduce the concept of religious reading as a social-contextual approach to literature. This approach, primarily drawing on the work of Robert Detweiler, is elucidated in the introduction. Its efficacy is demonstrated through the practical interpretation of one seminal work of European fiction: Gombrowicz’s Cosmos. The conclusion outlines the value of this reading mode for theological anthropology and spirituality, which can be summarized in four key points: (I) cultivating a Christian pre-understanding through a religious reading of fictional works; (II) fostering interdisciplinary dialogue between...

Grief is one of the anthropological constants of human existence. It is therefore logical that it also affects those for whom spirituality is an essential part of life. The relationship between grief and spirituality has been predominantly studied in international contexts. This article aims to address the following question. How are grief and spirituality intertwined in the Czech context? The conceptual part of the article draws on social science research that explores the relationship between spirituality and grief, which is also framed within the poimenic context of care for the bereaved. The distinction between core and shell beliefs seems...
