The literary approach used in the Gospel according to John expresses a unique way of thinking which also expresses or grasps the deep essence of Christian spiritual life. The present essay describes some typical shapes of Johannine literary expression as they are related to what may be called "union with God" in the sense of "mutual immanence" (Dodd). The examined textual structures, such as chiasm, concentric scheme, or "I am" sentences, reflect not only Christ’s divine being and his descent/ascent, but also – and most importantly – the disciple’s participation in such realties. The main contribution offered in the paper is,...

The article examines the New Testament foundations of family law in the Household Codes (Col 3,17–4,1; Eph 5,21–6,9 and 1 Pet 2,18–3,7) in which the role and the mutual obligations and rights of the family members are established. An analysis and identification of the family law framework in the Household Codes are the focus of the first part of the article. In the second part of the article, selected Gospel texts in which Jesus meets parents and cures their children are analyzed to identify the legal structure of the family relations in these dynamic meetings. The method of study follows in the footsteps of methodical approaches...

Clement of Alexandria is well known as the author of Stromata I–VII and Paedagogus I–III, and also the minor works Protrepticus and Quis dives salvetur?. There are several texts by Clement, however, which are often neglected by scholars concerned with Clement’s theology: the so-called Stromata VIII, Excerpta ex Theodoto, Eclogae propheticae and the extant fragments of Hypotyposes. These texts have been evaluated as Clement’s masterpiece by certain scholars while others perceive them as strange and dissonant to Clement’s “standard” theology represented by Stromata and Paedagogus. There were even opinions in...

The main mission of the papal nunciature at the imperial court in Prague at the turn of the seventeenth century was the diplomatic representation of the Holy See, the coordination of the Counter-Reformation in a religiously mixed area and the supervision of church reform in alignment with the instructions of the Council of Trent. The papal nuncios could have also had various unofficial commitments to meet in favour of some of their relatives or other individuals. This is very well documented in Giovanni Stefano Ferrari’s private registry. He held the office of papal nuncio at the imperial court between 1604‒1607. The private registry contains...

This article is a contribution to the recurrent debates on the (in)compatibility between Catholic and liberal tradition. It focuses on the differences between these traditions concerning their conceptual foundations: liberty and, more extensively, social order. In the first part, the article characterizes the most important doctrinal elements of liberal and Catholic political theory. In liberal tradition, the emphasis is upon normative and ontological individualism and the primacy of individual liberty. Catholic social ontology offers a rich understanding of social order where it differentiates between partnerships and communities. This is linked to...

In this paper, we will describe and systematically discuss the heterogeneous and diversified structure of the current theological and philosophical debate concerning Trinitarian ontology, or Trinitarian metaphysics. Our point of departure will be the New Trinitarian Ontologies conference held in Cambridge in September 2019. Recapitulating the most significant contributions presented at this conference, we will identify the key approaches to the problem of a Trinitarian revision of ontology and gradually reconstruct their main arguments. At the end of our paper, we will be concerned with the mutual relations between these approaches. This should serve...

The life of Bishop Hnilica – a Jesuit, a secretly consecrated bishop who ordained an important figure of the underground Church J. Ch. Korec – who became a legend mainly because he initiated works of evangelization and solidarity, especially with the Church under the oppression of the Communist regime – was existentially connected with the event and messages of the apparitions in Fatima. This study aims to describe the basic pillars of his mariology, internally connected with soteriology, on the basis of archival materials (sermons, lectures, speeches). There will be a focus on his preferred term "co-redemption". An analysis of his...

Shi‘ite Islam posits that medical technologies such as cloning or genetic engineering are not a change in God’s creation and cannot be forbidden for this reason. The study presents the main religious-legal arguments for this opinion and the difference between the view of Shi‘ite theology and jurisprudence in the interpretation of the term “change in God’s creation”. Jurisprudence emphasizes the spiritual nature of change (deviation from monotheism) over physical change and supports it with other methodological principles. This definition excludes the analysed medical techniques, and therefore jurisprudence does...

This paper introduces the penal process in the Church addressing the gravest delicts committed against morals. This has undergone certain modifications in recent years along with the precepts of the penal law of the Slovak Republic concerning these kinds of delicts. Of great importance in this context was the Second Vatican Council, the Code of Canon Law promulgated in 1983 and the Code of Canons of the Eastern Churches that came into force in 1991. Responding to a series of scandals of a sexual nature surrounding clerics that were exposed towards the end of the last century, the Church adopted serious modifications to the penal law. The most...

The authors of this study have researched an internal periodical of the German Free Masons Die Drei Ringe which was published from the year 1925 until 1938. Their interest focuses on the attitude of the German Free Masons towards the figure of T. G. Masaryk in the First Czechoslovak Republic. There are neither positive nor negative expressions of interest towards the first President until the year 1929. An increasing number of references and a growing intensity of expressed esteem are apparent as of 1930. German Free Masons in Bohemia and Moravia were especially attracted to Masaryk’s concept of humanity, democracy and equality of nations. Much...
