The aim of the study is to discuss the identity of the two disciples traveling to Emmaus and to point out the importance and role of these disciples in this story as well as in connection with the entirety of Luke’s double work (Luke‑Acts). We know the identity of one of the disciples traveling to Emmaus, Cleopas (Luke 24:18), who did not belong to the group of twelve disciples (Luke 6:14–16) and does not otherwise appear in the New Testament. The identity of the other disciple cannot be determined, although various names have been proposed for him since the Gospel of Luke was written: Simon, Nathanael, Amaon, Peter, Nicodemus, Philip,...

The aim of the paper is to examine the ontology of time in the works of Thomas Aquinas. In the first part, the paper presents a discusion of the philosophy of time in twentieth century and defines the differences between the A‑theory of time and the B‑theory of time as well as between presentism and eternalism. In the second part, the paper provides an interpretation of Aquinas’s texts, which is compatible with the A‑theory of time and presentism. In the last part, the paper presents and criticizes the approach which interprets the works of Aquinas as being compatible with the B‑theory of time and eternalism.

Starting from a positive evaluation of Vatican II and taking into account the long period over which the Council has been received, the present study examines certain conciliar documents that have had the greatest influence on the renewal of Catholic theolo-gy, in particular its methodology. First, the article underlines how the Council has evolved as a “laboratory” of renewed theology. It consequently examines the key text of the Council’s renewal programme: point 16 from the decree Optatam totius. Finally, it highlights the renewal impulses present in numbers 11 and 17 of the Unitatis redintegratio decree. The analyses of the idea...

Czech Catholics use a special form of the first commandment of the Decalogue, which could be translated “Thou shalt believe in one God”. Although it allegedly originates with Augustine, it is in fact a much later composition used only in the Czech and German versions. An inquiry revealed that it was first used by Peter Canisius in the German version of his Short Catechism (probably 1568, but at latest 1575). Canisius dared to reformulate the first commandment because others had done it before: using either another biblical commandment “Worship the Lord your God, and serve only him” (Deuteronomy 6,13; Matthew 4:10) or even the...

The study explores the potential benefit of philosophical concepts of theodicy for theological reflection. First, the study turns back to the Enlightenment, when the question of theodicy played a crucial role in the shaping of the modern view of Christianity, or major monotheistic religions in general. It deals with one of the most significant concepts of the time, the essay on theodicy by G. W. Leibniz. Second, it takes notice of the reception of Leibniz’s thought in certain philosophical currents at the turn of the twenty-first century, which also resonates in contemporary discussions. It deals mainly with issues made popular in the works of...

The article completes the study of totalitarianism in the twentieth century. In the first part of the text, we reviewed Joseph Vialatoux’s commentary on Hobbes’ political theory. In the second part, which we present here, we draw conclusions and general principles. Vialatoux is of the opinion that every totalitarianism is a form of naturalism. There are two main forms here. The first form is Hobbes philosophy, while the second is Durkheim’s sociologism. In response to totalitarianism, Vialatoux formulates the philosophy of mind. He then develops the theme of freedom. He distinguishes between inner and outer freedom. In conclusion,...

The impulses of Pope Francis concerning the unity of Christians are based on his way of thinking, which is shaped by spiritual depth, theological study and life experience. The text examines the sources of Bergoglio’s forma mentis in Jesuit spirituality, in the philosophy of Romano Guardini, and in the historical context of Latin America in the second half of the twentieth century. The focus here is on the antinomic understanding of reality as the core of Bergoglio’s intellectual world, which allows him to formulate a pastoral programme of “culture of encounter” that becomes a means of reconciliation in society, in the Church,...

The last papal document on holiness is the Apostolic Exhortation of Pope Francis Gaudete et exsultate (GeE) from 2018. Surprisingly, the Pope’s explicit statement in the introduction is that the document does not intend to define holiness. The reasons are in all probability related to the pastoral and encouraging character of the document. Despite the recommendations of the Pope, the author of this paper presents the hypothesis that the document nevertheless contains a certain defining strategy. It is not, however, a classic form of definition (essential or nominal) that contains the necessary and sufficient conditions. This interesting...

As a result of the December laws and the emergence of Austria‑Hungary, Czech society experienced a short period of revolt between years 1868 and 1869 against the new organization of the monarchy. The monarchy responded by tightening the censorship of the opposition press. Because of this situation, the preachers Jan Evangelista Bílý and Beneš Metod Kulda were condemned for publishing brochures promoting religious and patriotic thoughts. The trial, however, ended up being counterproductive and was used to promote exactly the same ideas which the priests had been arrested for. The study is based primarily on source research in the fund Beneš Method...

The article contains the history of the Marian column topped by the statue of Our Lady, later known as the statue of Our Lady in Exile. After the destruction of the Marian column containing the statue of Our Lady on the Old Town Square in Prague in 1918, persistent efforts by Czech Catholics to renew the statue of the Immaculate Conception occurred. These efforts culminated in 1955 when the Czechoslovak exile community in Chicago welcomed the statue of the Immaculate Conception into her exile on the grounds of the Monastery of St. Procopius in Lisle. There the statue became a pilgrimage site and a pillar of the spiritual life of Czech exiles in the...
