This article in the field of fundamental moral theology presents natural teleology and per se determination of human action, which establish the essence of morality according to Thomas Aquinas. By observing nature, Aquinas came to the conclusion that nothing happens randomly, but every being acts because it pursues certain goals. The end of an act is thus the first principle of understanding in the order of acts. Some intended ends, by their nature, require a specific object. Such objects are per se ordained to the end of an act. An action can pursue only one proximate end, but can be ordained to several remote ends, one of which is the...

This study is a follow-up on the two previous treatises on Christ’s hierarchical offices and brings this series to a close. The author focuses on Christ’s kingly office in Scheeben’s two main works. The German theologian places it fully in the context of the other two offices and finds manifold link-ups with prefigures in the Old Testament. The focus on Jesus the King during his earthly life is left behind and full attention, in contrast, is given to Christ’s reign after His Ascension. The strong side of Scheeben’s theological reflection about Christ the King is its accord with his solution of the primary purpose of...

The reception of Kierkegaard’s thought in twentieth century theology was extremely varied and complex. One can, however, identify in it thematic lines which originated largely due to the fact that theologians reflected not only on Kierkegaard’s primary work but also on its secondary reception in their contemporaries and predecessors. The repeated emphasis on certain moments of Kierkegaard’s thought led to the emergence of an intellectual continuity within the theological reception. I present four basic thematic lines in the article which run through the theological reception in different denominational and linguistic environments....

The aim of the article is to present the process of persecution of Slovak Catholic priests in Upper Hungary at the beginning of the twentieth century. Hungarian bishops punished politically active priests by making them forcibly serve in the poorest parishes across all the Hungarian dioceses. It was a strategic way of Hungarianizing the Hungarian church hierarchy, which involved bullying them to morally and socially breaking non-Hungarian priests. The article presents the priest Karol Anton Medvecký, who was in a dispute with the Bishop of Banská Bystrica, Wolfgang Radnai. The bishop left Medvecký to work in the parish of Bacúrov for almost ten years,...

There are words in the Catholic doctrine where the meaning is not unambiguous, but ambiguous or polysemous. Ideally, there should be more monosemic and less polysemic expressions. This cannot be prevented in many cases. There are several options, however, where ambiguity or polysemy can be eliminated. This may help to refine Catholic doctrine. The aim of my study is not the pastoral aspect as a matter of priority, consisting in the gradual introduction of new terms into homilies, catechisms or prayer books, but a theological view, whereby the task is to argue from the aspect of the content of the doctrine and correctness of the Slovak language. This...

The aim of this study is to analyse the position of churches and the influence of religion in the public and political life of the Czech Republic after 1989. Attention is also focused on the relationship between churches and political parties, the calls of churches to participate in elections and whether they called for the support of specific political parties. The study also looks at the recruitment of political leaders from the church’s hierarchy and major Christian issues in the public agenda, media and politics. The study is linked to additional sources and literature.

A significant proportion of Catholic global charitable activities take place not only in corporate Charity agencies (ChA), but also in local volunteer groups in parishes. The parish environment of Charity underwent a significant decline in Czechoslovakia during the twentieth century, which continued with the unilateral expansion of Charity agencies after 1990. Due to the new ecclesiological emphases, following the encyclical Deus caritas est, there is a renewed sensitivity to the charitable ministry of parishes and ways are being sought to establish it where it has not been before. There is a minimum of knowledge in this area. The aim of this study...

The authors analytically and critically study papal statements on Free Masons during the period 1738‒1878. The period 1878‒1983 will be the subject of the following article. The Catholic Magisterium of that historical period did not fully distinguish between Free Masons, Illuminates, Carbonari and other organisations which often had different aims and methods of work. The problem is also the degree of connectedness between Free Masons and the French Revolution. There is no accusation of Satanism in any of the papal documents. There is another problem when, based on its experience with Italian and perhaps French Lodges, the Papacy pronounced...
