The Letter of James, although one of the last to be included in the canonical list, has gained an undisputed position in the Canon of the New Testament. Our study, which looks at the history of the reception of the Letter of James from the time of its first use and its acceptance into the New Testament canon to the present, is divided into three parts. The first presents the history of the early reception of the Letter of James and its inclusion in the canon of the New Testament. The second part discusses the attitudes towards and judgments on the Letter of James during the Reformation. Finally, the third part briefly describes what interest the Letter...

The author deals with the analogy of the dynamics of language change and the change in tradition within the wider project of the theory of tradition. He relies particularly on the work of German philologists. Special attention is paid to theories of semantic change from the point of view of historical semantics, theory of communication, as well as variationist sociolinguistics. He also considers the possibility of applying Rudi Keller‘s concept of "an invisible hand" to the dynamics of language change. Christian tradition has a language character. Therefore, it can be examined not only in analogy with language, but the change in tradition can...

In Gregory’s discourse on spiritual development in The Life of Moses and Commentary on the Song of Songs we find several images of women, whose symbolic meaning is in some cases positive, in others negative. The "female" symbolizes the lower, irrational, part of the human soul, and vice, while the "male", in contrast, represents rationality and virtue. Parallel with these images the "female" has a positive value when her capacity for protecting fragile life and supporting its growth comes to the fore. Her opposite here is the symbolically "male" destroyer, the Devil. The different evaluation of "female" (or "male") in the two cases depends on...

The article describes the basic motif of praise as it appears in Hispanic liturgical texts that perceive God‘s action in the dynamics of salvation. The theme of creation and redemption is the cornerstone of every illatio, which evolves in the subsequent eulogy. Additional motifs contained in illatio, which according to the liturgical year are marked as paschal and lust, are developed from this original and basic theme. The original image of creation and redemption also refers to the one mystery of Christ, his incarnation, suffering and glorification. The theme of the incarnation is mariological and represents Mary as Mother and Virgo. It leads...

This study presents the life and work of the Belgian geologist and professor of dogmatic theology Henry de Dorlodot (1855–1929). The author of this study presents the life of this thinker and highlights his active participation in the World Darwinist Congress in Cambridge in 1909. Dorlodot published his work about the evolution of fauna and flora from the point of view of Catholic Orthodoxy in 1921. This was the reason for an investigation by the Pontifical Biblical Commission, followed by one from the Holy Office. Dorlodot did not publish this intended book about human evolution during his lifetime. After the discovery of the original manuscript,...

Religious arguments are often used in public debates affecting morality. The author asks, if this starting point of faith is inevitable, and what effective communication forms of this kind should be like. The research questions she discusses, within the case study of the Slovak referendum about family, sparked a heated public debate. Working on her former analysis of topics and arguments in media discourse, she creates in-depth interviews with prominent journalists. She has identified two key argumentative foundations – the problem of naturalness and the rejection of manipulation – functioning as bases for absolutely different convictions....

The paper discusses dementia syndrome in the pastoral practice of the Church and pastoral care focusing on the corporeal aspect of the human being, which enables dementia patients to engage in contact with people around them even in their situation involving limited verbal communication. The paper first deals with dementia and the limitations associated with it and then focuses on the aspect of corporeity in the context of dementia syndrome. The paper subsequently discusses the aspect of corporeity as a point of departure for pastoral care for dementia patients and the concept of Seelsorge as Leibsorge. Finally it focuses on the form Seelsorge as Leibsorge...

The paper attempts to present a differentiated conception of diakonia as Christian oriented helping activity in modern society. It starts from the forms of social differentiation, as described by Luhmann’s social systems theory (society, interaction, organizations), and discusses them further in the context of practical‑theologically oriented attitudes to distinguishing between social forms of religion. It brings to mind J. H. Wichern’s typology of triple diakonia (free, civic, and church diakonia) and then tests the indicated theoretical points of departure on the real forms of diakonia in the Evangelical Church of Czech Brethren...

The contribution deals with the efforts of introducing the Czechoslovak People‘s Party (CPP) to Slovakia in the period after its close co‑operation with Hlinka‘s Slovak People‘s Party (SPP), after 26 November 1921. Since that time, CPP has lost significant influence on the formation of Catholic politics in Slovakia and SPP is aware that this could lead to serious competition in its candidacy. For this reason, SPP regarded any stronger internal disagreement as CPP‘s potential arrival in Slovakia. Those were the activities of Jozef Vrabec, Martin Mičura and the Association of Christian Farm Workers and Smallholders, among...

The article examines the understanding of personal identity based on a contemporary interpretation of Aquinas’s teaching. The author surveys Aquinas’ statements on this topic in several of his works. The author continues with an examination of the views of prominent authors on this issue and then pursues and develops a justification for his own solution. It is argued that according to Aquinas the principle of personal identity consists in the form that is directed towards a connection with a particular matter. Moreover, the author offers a suggestion as to how to position Aquinas’ stance on the issue within the context of current...
