The paper explores the relationship between Ambrose’s mystagogical and exegetical method. Both of them bring the Christian catechumen or believer from the superficial perception of the biblical text or visible reality to the realm of the invisible that is hidden from the physical senses and is accessible only through faith. After a brief introduction to the significant characteristics of Ambrose’s biblical exegesis, Ambrose’s baptismal catecheses are analysed in order to clarify the conjunction of mystagogy and exegesis. The latter part of this article focuses on an example of Ambrose’s exegetical work, i.e., his commentaries...

Albert of Sternberg was a member of an important Moravian and Bohemian noble family ‒ the Sternbergs ‒ and a prominent courtier and counsellor to Emperor Charles IV. This paper investigates Albert’s bishopric in Schwerin (1356–1364) in detail for the first time. Albert became the Bishop of Schwerin at an early age by a papal provision at Charles IV’s request in 1356. The diocese was indebted at that time and the key-properties of the bishopric were controlled by members of the von Bülow noble-house. After a long struggle, Albert managed to negotiate a compromise with von the Bülows. Albert only visited his bishopric...

The history of the Reformed Church has its own personalities in each country. This article focus on the determinant of the Church boards evolution in the Kingdom of Hungary in the seventeenth century. We follow the evolution of each board at the beginning of the century, as well as the influence of Juraj Drugeth’s conversion. The Drugets were one of the most important territorial lords and executed the Counter-reformation throughout the seventeenth century. The Counter-reformation has left its own print step on the boards. A number of them perished or had to find strong protectors. We focus explicitly on the Kingdom of Hungary in this article,...

The aim of this study is to point out the importance and complexity of mother tongue enrichment in an effort to develop or build a theology and a theological dictionary. Using the example of the national revivalist, theologian and Biblical scholar František Sušil working in the nineteenth century in Moravia, various approaches and motivations for developing and expanding the mother tongue can be observed. In addition to word formation using standard word-composing approaches and verb substantiation, there will also be a focus on Sušil's original work, which attempts to refine the translation of Scripture and enrich the theological dictionary with...

The aim of the study is to provide a look at Newman’s understanding of doctrinal development up to his An Essay on the Development of Christian Doctrine and outline the relevance of Newman’s apologetics even today. In accordance with Newman’s personal assessments, the criteriological and heuristic value of his Essay is examined. It is confirmed that Newman did not plan to convince all his readers, but to remove objections to his personal acceptance of Roman Catholicism. He thus provided an example of not a strictly scientific argument, but a process of acquiring moral certainty through the accumulation of various probabilities. Newman’s...

The present study deals with the work of the Congregation of the Most Holy Redeemer in the diocese of České Budějovice in the 1920s. At the request of the Czechoslovak party, Pope Benedict XV shortly after 1918 decided that the redemptorist college in České Budějovice would be attached to the Prague province and the remaining three German ones transformed into a special viceprovincie, subordinated to the general order in Rome. This act aroused a strong resistance of the public, especially among local German Catholics. The study analyzes the background of this important decision, which did not only influence the ideas of the Holy See about religious...

The study presents a controversy among Czech Catholics, culminating in 1947. It explains the interpersonal and intellectual dynamics of post-war Catholicism and demonstrates how the so-called campaign against Catholic writers unfolded the debate on the basic tone of modern Catholicism, i.e. its relationship to the contemporary world, about how believers are to communicate with contemporary society, and about the need to revise this approach. The controversy was led by a reflection on turnovers: integral Catholicism, integral Catholic, religious rightist and leftist. Its main protagonists were Adolf Kajpr SJ, Timotheus Vodička, and Jindřich Středa...

This study presents contemporary Muslim discourse concerning plurality of religions. How does contemporary Muslim theology of religions deal with the diversity and difference of faiths and religious traditions in the world? This discourse is often based on ideas of the threefold typology of exclusivism–inclusivism–pluralism that was developed in the context of Christian theology of religions. After a presentation of the individual paradigms of the threefold typology, the study explores its usage in the context of Muslim theology of religions with its own specifics. Examples of different theological approaches of Muslim thinkers (Tim...

Human dignity is often tied to a person. The study examines the possibility of human dignity, provided that the person does not exist. Derek Parfit's utilitarianism of states contemplates the value of states of happiness. It can be assumed that these states have dignity, and thus the human being who owns these states also gains dignity. The study responds to numerous arguments by the Catholic theologian C. V. Pospíšil. The discussion is over whether the absence of a person leads to a inhumane world. The utilitarianism of states that does not assume the existence of a person does not, however, lead to a inhuman world. Utilitarianism of states leads...
