The aim of this article is to present Clement of Alexandria’s response to the Valentinian concepts of baptism, with an emphasis not on his critical position (which is absolutely predominant), but on some of the elements that Clement is inspired by and which enrich his own theology by their creative adaptation. This is in particular the Valentinian conception of baptism as an entry into knowledge and into a new future, or as a spiritual resurrection that can be experienced already here in this world. The article draws on Clement’s Excerpts from Theodotus and Eclogae propheticae, as well as on his Paedagogus and Stromata...

Gregory of Nazianzus valued the educational influence of poetry. He hoped that the recipients of his poetry would be not only delighted, but also educated and convinced by its attractive form. This is the case with the problem of the Holy Trinity as well. A closer study of Gregory’s verses, presenting and introducing the secret of the Holy Trinity, reveals the union of the impersonal view of Gregory the Theologian with the profound personal feeling of Gregory the man. Gregory proposes a clear definition of the mutual relation of the three divine persons, their trinity, and presents the immense secret of the Trinity. In relation to man, he argues...

The aim of the paper is to examine metaethical aspects of the theory of natural law in Thomas Aquinas. The theses of the paper is that Aquinas does not reduce the meaning of the term ‘good’ to something natural and does not derive value judgements from the factual. In the first part, the main arguments are presented in favour of irreducibility of the meaning of ‘the good’. In the second part, the main argument is introduced in favour of a dichotomy between fact and values (the difference between factuals and value judgments). In the third part, the understanding of the concept of good is introduced. Subsequently, the concept...

This article deals with three representatives of Reformation theology and their teachings on sin and guilt. Sin is a theological category that expresses the relationship of man coram Deo. Luther’s teaching speaks of sin as a change in one’s status toward radical rejection of trust in God. Guilt is forgiven in the process of salvation, but as it is expressed in Luther’s teaching about simul iustus et peccator, one’s entire life remains to be repentant. In Schleiermacher’s thought, sin is a change in self-consciousness, and guilt is not greatly emphasised. Kierkegaard presents sin as a change of subject in the individual....

This study deals with the intermingling of nationalism with spiritual esoteric trends, especially in the environment of the workers of the Ostrava industrial agglomeration, where the spiritualist movement found a strong application at the beginning of the twentieth century. Particular attention is paid to the development in Těšín Silesia, part of which is part of the industrial agglomeration. In this ethnically mixed area, Spiritism originally brought together members of both Polish and Czech nationalities. Czechs and Poles were united by their reservations about the Catholic Church, which they perceived as a backward institution linked to the ruling...

The aim of the article is to present and criticise the political thought of Alasdair MacIntyre, one of the most renowned contemporary moral philosophers. This eminent representative of the Aristotelian-Thomistic tradition is a strong opponent of the modern state, which he does not consider to be an appropriate place for his favoured politics of the common good. He proposes the politics of local communities as his alternative. The article criticises his alternative by focusing on the premises of his understanding of the concept of the common good. In several steps, there is an attempt to deminstrate how his conceptualisation is not completely faithful...

This article presents the work of the French thinker and economist Pierre-Yves Gomez (* 1960). This author seeks to define the neoliberal model of economics and society, and defends the principles of the Christian social doctrine. Against the background of Gomez’s texts, I attempt to show that the current neoliberal model can lead to a totalitarian conception of power in society. The main manifestation of neoliberalism is the obscuration of genuine human labour and concrete material values. These are replaced by speculation. According to Gomez, the company’s goal, which lies in the development of human persons and society as a whole, is...

Based on a critical analysis of the periodicals Svobodný zednář and Die drei Ringe, the authors of the article examine the attitudes of Czechoslovak Free Masons towards the question of the evolutionary origins of the human being and towards Darwinism in the period of 1925‒1938. Czech Free Masons had no interest in this issue. A clear rejection of Social Darwinism and racism can be found. German Free Masons, living in this country, consequently accepted the evolutionary origins of humans and naturally stood up against Social Darwinism, especially from 1933 on. The Darwinist concept of human origins was not used in even one case against the Bible,...
