Antický životopis, sociální jednání a kanonická evangelia

Ancient Biography, Social Actions and Canonical Gospels

Magdalena Vytlačilová

Studia Theologica 2024, 26(1):1-22 | DOI: 10.5507/sth.2024.002650

The study serves two main purposes. First, it aims to provide a definition of ancient biography that can account for the genre’s diversity without viewing this diversity as problematic. Second, the study seeks to introduce the canonical gospels, describe their shared and distinct features to ancient biography and emphasise the implications of this approach for the interpretation of the gospels, which are frequently overlooked in contemporary research. As I point out, the first goal can be achieved by distinguishing between primary characteristics (an explicit focus on the life of a single protagonist and the intention to provide their life as...

Proklínací žalmy a Denní modlitba církve

Imprecatory Psalms and the Daily Prayer of the Church

Pavel Kopeček

Studia Theologica 2024, 26(1):23-53 | DOI: 10.5507/sth.2023.060717

The Psalter of the current Liturgia Horarum does not contain the Imprecatory Psalms, which for many centuries were part of the Prayer of the office. This modification of the Psalter caused a discussion among researchers about the legitimacy of the post-conciliar Reform of the Psalter of the Church’s Daily Prayer. In this contribution, I would like to outline the significance of the prayer of Imprecatory Psalms in the history of the liturgy and clarify the motives for the modification of the Psalter after the Second Vatican Council. The indicated interpretations of the Imprecatory Psalms lead to their understanding, and today’s believer...

Pavel v Arábii (Gal 1,17)

Paul in Arabia (Gal 1:17)

Petr Mareček

Studia Theologica 2024, 26(1):55-74 | DOI: 10.5507/sth.2023.063749

The Epistle to the Galatians, which is the richest in historical references to Paul’s conversion and his apostolic activity (Gal 1:11–2:21), contains one of the most interesting remarks in Paul’s letters, “I went to Arabia” (Gal 1:17b). This brief autobiographical statement is not easy to clarify. A careful consideration of all the factors leads to the conclusion that Paul travelled to the territory of the Nabatean kingdom to do missionary work there. In keeping with Paul’s later missionary activity, which is oriented toward large cities, and which usually begins in a Jewish synagogue, it is plausible to assume that...

Rituální studia a rané křesťanství

Ritual Studies and Early Christianity

Jiří Gebelt

Studia Theologica 2024, 26(1):75-97 | DOI: 10.5507/sth.2023.061553

In this paper, I focus on the emergence of ritual studies and subsequently formulate six characteristics that, in my opinion, establish their identity: a) an emphasis on being grounded in ritual theories; b) a plurality of ritual definitions; c) a wide area of application of ritual theories; d) a ritual understood as (performative) action; e) the plurality of methods; f) interdisciplinarity. Based on these characteristics of ritual studies, I deal with some aspects of their application to early Christianity. I demonstrate the benefit and innovation of this perspective on selected approaches: new viewpoints on rites of passage (DeMaris) and on the origin...

Inovatívne pastoračné spôsoby ohlasovania trinitárneho tajomstva súčasnému človeku

Innovative Pastoral Ways of Announcing the Trinitarian Mystery to Contemporary Man

Patrik Maturkanič

Studia Theologica 2024, 26(1):99-113 | DOI: 10.5507/sth.2024.007637

The paper discusses the legacy of the ecclesiastical community preserved in the ecclesial memory (tradition) intended for all times, and therefore also for the “challenges of today” inscribed in the particular “signs of the times”. Without a doubt, this includes the desire of western man for a content, happy, and fulfilled life in all aspects of human life. The main aim of the article is to provide the most plausible answer about the meaning of man’s existence and the paths to its fulfilment not only to the believer living in a certain cultural framework, but also to everyone who asks this question. Our answer cannot help...

Zachovávat právo a milovat milosrdenství: Ke vztahu lásky a spravedlnosti v kontextu křesťanského sociálního jednání

To Keep Justice and to Love Mercy: On the Relationship between Love and Justice in the Context of Christian Social Practice

Karel Šimr

Studia Theologica 2024, 26(1):115-133 | DOI: 10.5507/sth.2023.057956

In the biblical tradition, justice and mercy form the basic structure of God’s will for human life and community. They also determine the contents of the social activity of the church, diakonia. From the theological point of view, they form a unity in God, nevertheless in the reality of this world they often exist in mutual tension, and in the history of a diaconal practice the emphasis on one or the other undergoes changes. This study aims to define a theologically justified perspective of the relationship between justice and love, respectively mercy, that can serve to orientate within the problems of Christian social activity. The study starts...

Synodalitou k obnově naplňování poslání partikulární církve

Renewal of the Mission of the Particular Church Through Synodality

Jiří Brtník

Studia Theologica 2024, 26(1):135-163 | DOI: 10.5507/sth.2023.058583

The article presents the results of the author’s pastoral-theological thesis Synodality and a Mission of the People of God : a Transformation of Pastoral Practice in the Diocese of Brno as a Response to the Change of an Era (2023). The thesis was questioning how the Church should respond to the present change in epoch and especially to the weakness of the Christian testimony of the Communion of the People of \God in the past and in the present time. Critical theological research, including the Magisterium of Pope Francis, and pastoral discernment demonstrate that the best answer is a synodal renewal. The work consequently offers an outline...

Biblická východiska Scheebenovy christologie

The Biblical Foundations of Scheeben’s Christologie

Veronika Řeháková

Studia Theologica 2024, 26(1):165-189 | DOI: 10.5507/sth.2023.054479

The study aims to characterise Scheeben’s work with the New Testament and secondarily with the Old Testament in his Christological reflections. First, the structure and central themes of two Christological passages from the Handbuch der katholischen Dogmatik, explicitly based on the New Testament, are presented, with these being our primary source texts. Scheeben’s methods of working with the Scripture are consequently specified. The third part discusses the various New Testament writings and their use in Scheeben’s Christology, concluding that the Johannine texts play a significant role. The fourth part presents the main Christological...

Anglosaská misie v Germánii v 8. století a listy Řehoře II.

The Anglo-Saxon Mission in Germania in the Eighth Century and the Letters of Gregory II

Marek Lis

Studia Theologica 2024, 26(1):191-211 | DOI: 10.5507/sth.2023.062586

The present article deals with the role of the papacy during the first years of the Anglo-Saxon mission in Germania. The topic has usually been approached in the past with respect to the following development in Europe, namely the Carolingian Renaissance. The goal of the contribution is to emphasise the autonomous character of the eithth century, when the creation of a new empire in the West was not yet considered. During this time, the papacy was facing a crisis within the empire coming from the Lombards and Byzantines. The Pope found support in Franks, but mostly in Anglo-Saxon missionaries. The dynamics of the process comes mostly from the apostolic...
