The aim of this article is to briefly present a defence of Christian art, more precisely icons, in the first half of the eighth century. This movement reached its peak with John of Damascus. Although some ancient writers had already commented on the subject of Christian art before the public appearance of John of Damascus, the Syriac Theologian became an especially ardent defender of holy images and tried to vindicate their presence in Christian churches on the basis of the Holy Scriptures and the Tradition of the Church. This article outlines how the monk of Mar Saba uses the Holy Scriptures and Tradition in the Three Discourses against those who...

The text of 2 Cor 12:7b, which is considered one of the most famous cruces interpretum in 2 Corinthians, is one of the most enigmatic texts in the entire collection of Paul’s letters. Although the expression σκόλοψ τῇ σαρκί in 2 Cor 12:7b has been the subject of much scholarly research with various proposed hypotheses, its interpretation remains unclear. It can perhaps be reckoned that this bodily suffering may have been familiar to the Corinthians and that it occurred to Paul in the context of ecstatic experiences. The Apostle Paul is not concerned with giving an accurate...

The study deals with the Medieval cult of the Bishop of Poitiers and the Doctor of the Church of St. Hilary of Poitiers in the region of Bohemia and Moravia. Although this important theologian and Western Church Father achieved a significant position in the world church environment, he does not play an important role in the Bohemian lands, including the current Roman Catholic Church, which is reflected in the quite small number of scholarly works devoted to his personality. The study is therefore aimed at emphasizing the antiquity of the cult of St. Hilary in the Bohemian and Moravian environment and with the help of detailed analyses provides the...

The introduction to the article characterises the epiclesis, its place and significance in liturgies (especially Eastern) and its theological aspects. Epiclesis is a prayer inviting the Holy Spirit on gifts as well as on communicants. The next part focuses on the relationship between epiclesis and transubstantiation, as well as the place of the priest in the epiclesis. The main part of the work offers a theological reflection on the significance of that part of the epiclesis in which the Holy Spirit calls on the communicants to transform and sanctify them. The fundamental question of the issue is focused on the question of what actually transforms...

The study aims to clarify how widespread and to what depth Scheeben’s dogmatic-theologian legacy affected Czech Catholic Theologians between the years 1918 and 1948. The research indicates that there was a wide awareness of both the person and the work of the German Professor among clergy as well as laity. We name nearly thirty authors who referred to Scheeben’s books. The most frequent themes were Ecclesiology, the Holy Spirit and grace, Sacramentology, and some authors touch on Trinitology, especially connected to spirituality.

The religious aspect of a conflict like the Prusso-Austrian War of 1866 may at first sight seem marginal and not very interesting. With pronounced exceptions, the subject has never been the subject of research by many authors who have otherwise literally broken the conflict down into micro-parts and described in minute detail most conceivable phenomena of a military-historical nature. Although the conflict could certainly not be classified as a religious or confessional war, the transparent dichotomy between the Catholicism of the Austrian Empire and the Protestantism of the Prussian Kingdom has inspired – especially in the German-speaking...

The present study focuses on the problem of compatibility between the Christian faith and journalistic ethics. It conceptualizes journalism in terms of professional ideology (Mark Deuze) and presents its key components (public service, objectivity, independence, immediacy, ethics). It shows how this ideology is linked to "high modernity" (D. C. Hallin) and how its imperative of impartiality and distance is at odds with a Christian conception of communication. It then uses empirical material (in-depth interviews with two Czech professional journalists from the public service media) to illustrate the strategies Czech journalists use to...

The article takes a closer look at Pope Benedict XVI’s message on the media, while setting the Holy Father’s ideas in the general context of media theory. It focuses on key themes emerging from the papal messages: (1) the role of the media in communication and community, (2) the relationship between the media and education, (3) the polarity of silence and word. Starting with the above-mentioned points, it then freely moves on to the question of defining the function and task of the media. The at least partially formed answers to the definitions then meet in the article with reflections on the actual activity of the media in the world. It...

Ordinary theology is one of the emerging streams in theology. In this approach, the accounts of God and creation by those believers who have not undergone formal academic theological training are researched. The article describes the conception of freedom in ordinary theology of the elderly who have participated in research on the constructions of spirituality and old age. A strong element of negative freedom from prescriptions and regulations is present in the ordinary theology of these seniors. This does not lead, however, to unreflected, unguided action, but to the possibility of adherence to the Ten Commandments as a guide for empathically relating...

The author of the study criticises the unusual length of the document, and therefore tries to present it in short to those interested. The fundamental shortcomings of the text are in methodology: both, the goal and concept of anthropology, are not defined; important documents of the International Theological Commission dealing with anthropology are not mentioned; for some passages, it was obligatory to recall the Compendium of the Social Doctrine of the Church. Methodological vagueness is the reason for the endless description of the biblical content. However, in particular parts of the document, there is a great deal of interesting information...
