The Decalogue as the Basis of the Confessional Mirror: A Historical­-Theological Study

This paper aims to answer the question of how the Ten Commandments have entered the current confessional mirror. It reflects on the practice of the early Christian Church, considering the writings of the Church Fathers, especially St. Augustine, noting the Rule of St. Benedict, and delving deeper into St. Gregory the Great and his Moralia in Job, which presented the concept of the cardinal sins to people. The emphasis placed on this concept began to shift towards the Decalogue in several gradual steps. One of these was the interest in studying the historical meaning of Scripture in the monastery of St. Victor on the outskirts of Paris, in which the monk Hugo stood out. There was also the morality of commitment introduced by Franciscan William Ockham and, finally, John Gerson’s efforts to bring about a general renewal of the Church. It was the latter who was instrumental in emphasizing the importance of the Decalogue, especially with his work Opusculum tripartitum, which is widely considered the foundation of modern catechisms in which the Ten Commandments and their interpretation occupy a prominent place; even up to the present day.
