Jiří Pavlán

Studia Theologica 2015, 17(1):1-17 | DOI: 10.5507/sth.2015.001

This article is devoted in dealing with the double narratives in the stories of King Saul and the question as to why readers are often confused. First, the main part is related to similarities between the Prophet Samuel and King Saul, which should lead readers to compare these two personalities. The text shows us that they both have a great deal in common by having a similar structural genealogy; both having been chosen by God and provided with prophetic gift. Second, at the beginning of Saul's stories (1 Sam 9:15) where Saul is repeatedly elected as king, and later rejected twice, there is an inner textual structure, whose goal is to stress the importance...

Greek Verbal Tenses and Aspects in the Book of Amos

Adam Mackerle

Studia Theologica 2015, 17(1):18-44 | DOI: 10.5507/sth.2015.002

The Greek text of Amos has been studied thus far primarily from the point of view of the textual criticism and of the correspondence of words and expressions between the Hebrew and Greek texts. The present article concentrates on the verbal forms (Greek tenses and aspects) used by the translator. The first reason is to determine his strategy in applying these grammatical tools. The second reason is to use this study to better understand the nature of his translation, since the Greek verbal forms used by the translator mainly pertain to the translation process, and only in a lesser degree to the Vorlage. The author argues that the way the translator...

The Speech Acts of Asking in Prayer in the Old Testament

Blahoslav Fajmon

Studia Theologica 2015, 17(1):45-69 | DOI: 10.5507/sth.2015.003

After previously constructing the classification of the speech acts of faith we now address specifically the speech acts of asking in prayer in the Old Testament from the perspective of Austin's and Searle's theory. We firstly analyze the declarative and directive dimensions of human blessing while also considering the "sincerity condition". Searle's condition of "non-obviousness", which is valid for the request, is not relevant in the case of asking in prayer. However, it opens the field of inquiry into the perlocutionary intentions of the one who prays. The last part of the essay examines the connection between the "preparatory conditions" of asking...

Anima Forma Corporis: Problems with Interpreting Dogma

Lukáš Novák

Studia Theologica 2015, 17(1):70-94 | DOI: 10.5507/sth.2015.004

The article raises the question about the content of the Catholic dogma defined at the Council of Vienne stating that the rational human soul is the form of the human body and arrives at the conclusion that there is no single generally accepted meaning in the theological tradition, but rather two radically differing lines of interpretation: a "thomistic" one tending to a more "monistic" interpretation of human nature, and a "reistic" one, resulting in a strongly pronounced dualism. Both of the interpretations are found to be laden with serious difficulties; the author contrasts various aspects of these interpretations, exposing their problems, and...

Počiatky Rehole pustovníkov sv. Augustína v Uhorsku a vznik ich samostatnej provincie

The Beginnings of the Order of the Hermits of Saint Augustinian in Hungary and the Establishment in Their Own Province

Miroslav Huťka

Studia Theologica 2015, 17(1):95-107 | DOI: 10.5507/sth.2015.005

The aim of this article is to analyze the work of Augustinians in medieval Hungary and reasons and circumstances for establishing their own province. The beginnings of the work of the Augustinians was connected with the activities of the Order of Saint William. This is portrayed in the first part of this article. The oldest reference to the Augustinians dates back to the year 1242 prior to the establishment of the Order. It is not clear if they were hermits of Tuscany or from a different order. There are several other reports about Italian hermits. The second part is devoted to the establishment of the Order province in Hungary. Its establishment is...

Neoliberální ekonomická teorie a praxe a její recepce u sv. Jana Pavla II., Benedikta XVI. a Františka

Neoliberal Economic Theory and Practice and its Reception in the Texts of Saint John Paul II, Benedict XVI and Francis

Marián Sekerák

Studia Theologica 2015, 17(1):108-132 | DOI: 10.5507/sth.2015.006

The issue of economic theory and practice constitutes a significant part of the Catholic Social Doctrine. In spite of the fact that various aspects of the doctrine have already been examined in both the Czech and Slovak geographical environment, there is still room for further and deeper investigation. In the paper, I focus on an analysis of neoliberal principles and their reception in the various texts of the three popes: Saint John Paul II, Benedict XVI, and Francis, respectively. I try to highlight that in their numerous statements (expressed implicitly or explicitly in the encyclical letters, apostolic exhortations, addresses, and homilies) we...

Aplikácia kánonu 1098 CIC v kánonickoprávnej vede a praxi

The Application of Canon 1098 in Canon-Law's Science and Practice

Vojtech Vladár

Studia Theologica 2015, 17(1):133-151 | DOI: 10.5507/sth.2015.007

Error dolosus, specified in the Canon 1098 of the Latin Code of Canon Law, ranks among the most treated Canon Law institutes, from a legal, as well as a practical point of view. The main reason lies specifically in its wide conceptual normative definition and indicated natural law constructions, which has since the time of its promulgation provided its potential retroactive application. In reference to the history of this Canon and the fact that despite thirty years of its legal existence, most of the relevant questions have not been clarified yet, this topic is also relevant at present. A number of discrepancies occur, specifically in this respect,...

Christian Moral Identity in Light of the Attitude to State-Organized Violence: the Just War Theory and Christian Pacifist Practice as Manifestations of Two Mutually Irreducible Ethical Approaches

Světla Hanke Jarošová

Studia Theologica 2015, 17(1):152-173 | DOI: 10.5507/sth.2015.008

The author examines the dual identity of a Christian as a member of the temporal political community, sharing its language, resources, and concerns, and a member of the community of faith founded on Jesus, called to witness to the new life made possible in Christ's cross and resurrection, in light of the just-war vs. pacifism debate. She identifies the distinct strategies of addressing ethical concerns underlying the two types of attitudes, viz. natural law ethics and ethics of life transformed by conversion and grace, as well as the corresponding accents on the futurity or presence of the Kingdom of God. While the two do not exclude one other, neither...
