Všechny cesty vedou do Říma

All Paths Lead to Rome

Zdeňka Hledíková

Studia Theologica 2017, 19(4):7-14 | DOI: 10.5507/sth.2017.049

This paper interprets the unusual high number of dispensations for applicants for ordination from various bishops and these apart from the usual terms. These came from the Prague diocese and are noted in the registers of the penitentiary of Leo X between the years 1516-1517, and are now published by L. Schmugge. The specific character of these 32 dispensations from the above-mentioned two-year period is analyzed in connection with the minimum number of the same type of dispensation to the Czech Lands from the time of Sixtus V which acknowledged Vladislaus II as Czech king. These fluctuated in the particular pontificates from none up to three cases....

Který biblický překlad je nejlepší?

Which Biblical Translation is the Best?

Ladislav Tichý

Studia Theologica 2017, 19(4):15-29 | DOI: 10.5507/sth.2017.058

There are quite a number of biblical translations into Czech. This contribution attempts to compare and analyze six contemporary Czech translations of the Bible. The texts used for the analysis are Mt 27:62–66 and 2 Cor 5:16–17. This relatively small textual basis does not allow of pronouncing a concrete and absolute judgement about which translation is the best. The advantages and disadvantages, however, of the particular translations have become apparent. This demonstrates that translating the Bible is a task that cannot be definitively completed, although the best result might remain as an at least approximatively achievable goal. The...

František X. Halas o vztahu T. G. Masaryka k římskokatolické církvi

František X. Halas on T. G. Masaryk‘s Relationship to the Roman Catholic Church

Miloš Trapl

Studia Theologica 2017, 19(4):31-39 | DOI: 10.5507/sth.2017.070

František X. Halas in his historical work was also concerned with the person of
T. G. Masaryk, in particular in his most extensive publication The Phenomenon of the Vatican. It analyses the struggle over the sense of Czech history between Masaryk and Pekař and explores in general Masaryk‘s views on the religious question. The greatest attention is paid to Masaryk‘s views of the Roman Catholic Church, both before the World War as well in the foreign resistance even at the time of his time in office as President. His interpretation of Masaryk‘s views is objective and understandably critical in a number of cases. It describes very...

The Pastoral Distinction between the Situation of the Two Forms of the Roman Rite – Tradition and Traditionalism

Pavel Ambros

Studia Theologica 2017, 19(4):41-66 | DOI: 10.5507/sth.2017.068

This study reflects on the newest discussion concerning the term reform of reform after the speech of Cardinal Robert Sarah at the conference Sacra Liturgia in London on 5 July 2016. It compares this lecture to the lecture during the Cologne Liturgy Days (29 March to 1 April 2017) called "Source of the Future: Ten years of motu proprio 'Summorum Pontificum' of Benedict XVI". For an understanding of the pastoral distinction between the two forms or the Roman rite there is a detailed pastoral-theological analysis of motu proprio Summorum Pontificum by Benedict XVI (2007). The introduction of the extraordinary form of the Latin rite is determined by three...

Clement of Alexandria in the Coptic Catena on the Gospels

Vít Hušek

Studia Theologica 2017, 19(4):67-86 | DOI: 10.5507/sth.2017.032

The article examines excerpts of Clement of Alexandria in the Coptic Catena on the Gospels; more precisely, the excerpts attributed to "[Saint] Clement". The excerpts are presented in a Czech translation with a commentary. It is suggested that all six excerpts are a paraphrase of a known work (i.e. not a fragment of Clement’s lost Hypotyposes): five from Clement’s Stromateis and one (mis-attributed by the catenist) from Cyril of Alexandria’s Commentary on John.

Marta či Marie – mezi životem aktivním a kontemplativním Pojetí práce u Bernarda z Clairvaux

Martha or Mary – between vita activa and vita contemplativa:
The Concept of the Work of Bernard of Clairvaux

Iva Adámková

Studia Theologica 2017, 19(4):87-101 | DOI: 10.5507/sth.2017.072

This article analyses the concept of work of Bernard of Clairvaux and also deals with the relationship between physical and mental work in the monastic milieu (vita activa and vita contemplativa), practical activity and inner rest. The author first turns to the beginnings of monastic tradition and Augustine's treatise De opere monachorum, which established a positive evaluation of physical work in monasticism. She then presents an approach to these subjects in Benedictine Rule as the central and normative text of Western monasticism. After an evaluation of various treatises of Bernard of Clairvaux (especially his Apologia ad Guillelmum abbatem and...

In the Spirit of Penance and Gratitude: The 500 Anniversary of the Reformation as an Opportunity to Strengthen Mutual Fellowship

Robert Svatoň

Studia Theologica 2017, 19(4):103-125 | DOI: 10.5507/sth.2017.045

The present text puts itself into the context of the 500 anniversary of the Reformation in 2017. The author provides an overview of the most important acts and documents connected with the preparation of the event. He initially attempts to sketch out a typology of various kinds of approaches which emerge when speaking of the issue. In connection with the political-cultural and confessional way of interpretation, he strengths the ecume-
nical dimension. The contribution subsequently provides impulses in order to support an ecumenically responsible and theologically founded approach, which the Christian might acquire in connection with the Year...

Pavel Štěpánek

Studia Theologica 2017, 19(4):127-139 | DOI: 10.5507/sth.2017.076

The Pilgrimage Church of the Assumption of our Lady in the town of Stará Boleslav (Bohemia) was reconstructed in the second decade of the seventeenth century  by two Italian architects Jacopo de Vaccani and Giovanni Maria Filippi. As there were not much money, the local priest John Christoph Kilian requested financial help on 2 February 1616 addressed to the Spanish King Philip III, aided by the Spanish Ambassador Baltasar de Zúñiga, resident in Prague. The author of this article found the correspondence about this petition in the Spanish State archive in Simancas: The original request is in Latin. A translation in Spanish and a summary in this...

Visits ad limina of Olomouc Bishop Charles II. of Liechtenstein‑Castelcorno and His Reports on the State of the Diocese

Tomáš Parma

Studia Theologica 2017, 19(4):141-159 | DOI: 10.5507/sth.2017.078

The aim of the paper is to briefly characterize the visits ad limina of the Olomouc Bishop Charles II. of Liechtenstein‑Castelcorno and the contents of his reports on the state of the diocese, conserved in the Secret Vatican Archive. The Bishop executed seven visits ad limina during his long episcopate (1664–1695), in the years 1667, 1672, 1675, 1682, 1685, 1689 and 1693, always through the mediation of a procurator. After describing the visits and the reports conserved in the archives, the author analyses the structure and the content of the text of the conserved reports. The final part of the article is focused on three issues of violation...

The Answers of the Priests of the Prague Archdiocese Concerning the Lauguages of their Parish Churches for the Inquiry of 1675

Nicolas Richard

Studia Theologica 2017, 19(4):161-184 | DOI: 10.5507/sth.2017.079

The question of the language of the parish during Early Modern times is a canonic problem, not only in Bohemia. The Prague chapter initiated an inquiry about the language used in the parishes in 1675 during the vacancy of the archiepiscopal see. This inquiry is a result of the modernization of administration. The details of the answers are perhaps more interesting than the global results. Although there are a number of gaps, the answers allow us to draw a more precise map of the language situation in the archdiocese, to identify not only the Germanisation movement after the Thirty Years War, but also the healthy condition of the Czech language, more...

Roman‑Canon Reflections of the Institution of Betrothal in Hungarian, Czechoslovak and Slovak Law

Miriam Laclavíková – Vojtech Vladár

Studia Theologica 2017, 19(4):185-218 | DOI: 10.5507/sth.2017.026

The majority of contemporary modern institutions of secular law have their foundations in history. While with some of them we can fall back on recent history, others have a more than thousand-year-old existence, this being the case of betrothal. This institution emerged in ancient civilizations, yet its shape was tinged for a long time by the domination of Roman law in particular, which also incorporated in a later period certain elements of Greek law. In light of the fact that Roman law was, from the third decade of the fourth century after Christ, increasingly influenced by Christian conceptions, a number of attributions typical for canon law can...

This study evaluates the life and work of Count Zikmund Václav Halka-Ledóchowski (1863–1944) in the context of his biographical background. This consisted of a prominent Catholic Polish noble lineage Lédochovski from the father’s side and the Czech-Austrian noble line of Zessner-Spitzenberg from the mother’s side. He left his hometown of Uherské Hradiště to studying at the theological institute of the Society of Jesus in Tirolean Innsbruck (1884–1887). François Maria Dalmace Leroy O.P. (1828–1905): a Pioneer in the Catholic Acceptance of the Evolutionary Origin of the Human Body

Ctirad Václav Pospíšil

Studia Theologica 2017, 19(4):241-261 | DOI: 10.5507/sth.2017.037

This study presents the life and work of the French Catholic theologian M. D. Leroy (1828–1905) regarding the issue of the evolutionary origin of humans. His book, published in 1891, met with harsh reactions from the side of transformism opponents, after which it was followed by the process of the Sacred Congregation of the Index. The work was condemned and the author was reprimanded. Leroy formally submitted himself to the Congregation’s decision. The implicit dualism was the basic problem of the so-called Mivart thesis. Leroy claims that the human body can be called human, if the body is united with its essential form only, ergo its immortal...

První pozemková reforma na statcích olomouckého arcibiskupství za Antonína Cyrila Stojana (1921–1923)

The First Land Reform on the Archbishopric of the Olomouc Properties
at the Time of Antonín Cyril Stojan (1921–1923)

Vít Němec

Studia Theologica 2017, 19(4):263-281 | DOI: 10.5507/sth.2017.074

The first land reform was a legal process carried out at the time of the first Czechoslovak Republic. Its target was to significantly reduce the extent of large land owner properties, in favour of small farmers. This legislation (organised by the State Land Office) impacted considerably a number of church institutions, including the Archbishopric of Olomouc. This study aims at mapping out the course of the first land reform on the Archbishopric properties and draws special attention to the period of the episcopate of Antonín Cyril Stojan. Stojan, who was archbishop of Olomouc in the years 1921–1923, was instrumental in a number of important projects...

The Issue of the Appointment of Vacant Canons in the Olomouc Chapter in the 1930s and the Efforts to Approve the New Chapter Statutes

Jitka Jonová

Studia Theologica 2017, 19(4):283-302 | DOI: 10.5507/sth.2017.066

The Appointment of the Vacant Canons in the metropolitan chapter of Olomouc, according to the statutes of 1826, included the Metropolitan Chapter and the Emperor. This type of occupation was abolished by the new Code of Canon Law (1917) and in 1918 the monarchy ceased to exist. While at the time of the episcopate of Archbishop Stojan the controversy over the Appointment of Vacant Canons took place especially with the newly established Czechoslovak state, which had forfeited the privileges of the "Habsburg Monarchy". Stojan was able to appoint new Canons in 1923. His successor Leopold Prečan also had to deal with the issue of vacant Canons as well as...

The author analyses an interesting document from the pontificate of Pope Pius XII in this study. The International Committee of Historical Sciences organized the Tenth International Congress of ICSH in the very city of Rome in 1955. Pope Pius XII was invited to deliver a speech to this assembly of renowned historians from all over the world. In the first part, the author analyses the complicated story of the relationship between the papacy, history and historical sciences from the very beginning up to the twentieth century. In the second part, he explores the historical context of this kind of papal teaching and the situation of Pope Pius XII in the...
