Along with the previous article "Three Levels of Love in the Greek? Words of Love in Non-Christian writers and the Church Fathers," published in ST 16,1 (2014), this paper provides a comparison between the semantic situation of classical Greek, the language of the Church Fathers and Biblical Greek. It specifically demonstrates that no (threefold) hierarchy of the terms of love has existed in any period. A comprehensive view of the wide spectrum of Biblical words for love is presented (it is not limited to ἀγαπᾶν, φιλεῖν, ἐρᾶν, στέργειν...

In his celebrated writing Cur Deus homo, Anselm of Canterbury († 1109) proposed the first systematical treatise on Christian soteriology in history. The greatest influence of Cur Deus homo lies in the concept of Christ's redemption which is interpreted as satisfaction, with this being the specific idea which continues to attract the attention of theologians. One of the first promoters of Anselm's idea was Richard of Saint-Victor († 1173), who, in his work Ad me clamat ex Seir, focused on the idea of satisfaction in connection with the additional soteriological questions. In comparison with Anselm's, however, Richard's concept of satisfaction...

The article focuses on Olomouc bishop Robert (1202-1240) and attempts to discover the reasons behind his resignation. Pope Gregory IX issued a papal bull in 1237 in which he condemned Robert for his public rejection of reverence for the stigmata of St. Francis of Assisi, as he did not deem them genuine. Thus, within the context of the relevant events at that time, Robert criticized important aspects of papal policy. In order to determine the broader motives for Robert's denial of the stigmata of St. Francis of Assisi, the text analyses written evidence of Francis having received the stigmata, the documents of the church authority's opinions on the...

The article deals with the basics of metaphysics of the German theologian Karl Rahner, as it developed in his key works Geist in Welt and Hörer des Wortes. In both cases, the article pertains to the second edition of both works, which are revised and supplemented. The starting point for the philosophical thinking of Karl Rahner can be seen in four philosophical streams: the classical scholasticism of St. Thomas Aquinas, Immanuel Kant's transcendental reflection, the intellectual dynamism of Joseph Maréchal and the existential philosophy of Martin Heidegger. More specifically, the scope of the article is to explore the question that is the fundamental...

The vicariate forane connects parishes, as local communities, and dioceses, as the local (particulate) church. A forane vicar (dean), a close collaborator with the diocesan bishop, stands at its head. In this article, we have summarized the rights and obligations of the vicar as they are specified in the common law plus the particular normative of the Olomouc Archdiocese. The vicar competencies are implemented on three levels: the vicar relationship with his vicariate clergy, the vicar relationship with the laity of the vicariate, and the vicar relationship with his own bishop and the diocese leadership. The vicar function is pastoral-coordination...

ČKD (Journal for/of Catholic Clergy), which was published in Czech in 1828-52 and 1860-1948, also contained a number of articles on Biblical topics. This article attempts to test the quality of the contributions concerning the language of the New Testament (one article from 1852) and Mary Magdalene (articles from 1830, 1865, 1916, and 1937). Although this is undoubtedly a pioneering work (on the importance of a knowledge of the language of the New Testament) and an effort to serve the readers and corroborate the liturgical tradition (in the first three articles on Mary Magdalene), a more searching critique and better discernment would have been desirable...

The paper concentrates on Karel Statečný's contribution to the field of moral theology and ethics. It evaluates the current discourse on Statečný's life and work, his activity in the Department of Moral Theology in České Budějovice and his attempt to establish a new concept of ethics. Finally, it sets out a hypothesis regarding the persistence of the Statečný's concept of ethics in the Czechoslovak Church after his death in 1927.

In this paper the author presents publications which are significant for revealing the attitudes of Czech Catholic theologians to the challenges of the natural sciences in the period 1850-1950, published in the periodicals Časopis Národního musea and Museum bohoslovců českomoravských. He subsequently evaluates in detail the so-called Braun thesis introduced by an important exponent of evolutional thinking in Bohemia of the second half of the 19th century J. L. Čelakovský and points out to the risk of an inclination to pantheism connected with it. Finally, the not-contradictoriness between the definition of man as "an animal capable of sin" on the one...

Based on a study of liturgical articles in the Journal of the Catholic Clergy (Časopis katolického duchovenstva), I point out the concept of the liturgy in the Czech environment and the formation of the liturgy. I introduce certain important Czech figures who were engaged in the liturgy and who are worthy of our attention.

Richard Špaček (1864-1925) is primarily known as Professor of dogmatic theology and Dean of Sts Cyril and Methodius Faculty of Theology in Olomouc. It is, however, less known that he began his academic career as a New Testament scholar. This article analyses his paper "The Fourth Gospel in Protestant Scholarship", published in the periodical Journal of the Catholic Clergy (Časopis katolického duchovenstva) in 1909. I claim that Špaček composed this text, which is a compilation of several German sources, with two intentions. First, he aimed at providing the Czech Catholic clergy with an answer to the translation of Harnack's History of Dogma. Second,...

The paper deals with the Czech theologian and Catholic priest Ignac Vesely (+1964) and his contribution to inter-religious relations between Christianity and Islam. The paper summarises his texts published in the periodical Journal of the Catholic Clergy (Časopis katolického duchovenstva) and describes his translation of the Koran (the first in the history of the Czech language) from Arabic to Czech. Ignac Vesely is presented as one of the predecessors of the declaration on the relation of the Church with non-Christian religions of the Second Vatican Council, Nostra aetate.

The aim of this paper is to demonstrate that Czech Catholic theology was developing promisingly specifically in the first half of 19th century, when the periodical Journal for Catholic Clergy (Časopis pro katolické duchovenstvo) began to be published. Only publications dealing with fundamental-theological topics, which is the field of interest of its author, are focused on in the paper. The content of the publications is briefly evaluated and compared with the contemporary status of theological knowledge.
