In the paper we compare Ian Barbour's four types of relationship between science and religion with Thomas Kuhn's theory of scientific revolutions and with George Lindbeck's theory of the nature of religious doctrine. It turns out that these three theories can be brought into correlation. On one hand Kuhn's theory can be refined and three kinds of scientific revolutions can be discriminated, which (together with normal science) correspond to Barbour's four types. On the other hand Lindbeck's three views on the nature of doctrine can be complemented by a fourth view and in this way brought into correspondence with Barbour's theory. With this fourth view...

The paper deals with Aquinas' concept of metaphysics. Firstly, the author explains what science is according to Aquinas, and which place belongs to metaphysics within Aquinas' division of the theoretical sciences. Secondly, the subject of metaphysics is determined in order to show the character of metaphysics. Aquinas' commentaries on Boethius' De Trinitate and on Aristotle's Metaphysics are examined as two of the most important texts on this problem. Thirdly, the author tries to explain and harmonize Aquinas' two different definitions of first philosophy.

According to can 1124 of the Code of Canon Law of 1983, without the expressed permission of the competent authority, marriage is prohibited between two baptized persons, one of whom is baptized in the Catholic Church and the other belonging to a Church or ecclesial community not in full communion with the Catholic Church (e.g. the Lutheran Church). As for mixed marriages, in the present valid Code of Canon Law, there is characteristic ecumenical spirit. There is no mention of the "heretic-party" but the Code of Canon Law speaks of the "baptized non-Catholic party". The local Ordinary of the Catholic party can grant permission for the canonical celebration...

This study presents an early commentary on the new encyclical letter focusing on its second, i.e. practical-theological and social-charitable, part. It points out its uniqueness and extraordinariness in the history of theology, and especially in the history of the Magisterium theology, the individual circles of its addressees, its spiritual as well as ecumenical potential, and its addressing of topics previously untouched.

This article offers a study about the praxis of viaticum in the Byzantine tradition. At the beginning it is shown that in the first centuries the term viaticum (in Greek efodion) was not used exclusively for the Eucharist received in the last moments of the terrestrial life. The first part of the article deals with four hagiographical fonts: the biographies of St. Melany, of St. Mary of Egypt, of St. Anthony the Great, and of St. Macrina. In the earlier biographies (St. Anthony and St. Macrina), there is no mention of the Eucharist as viaticum. But it does not mean that St. Anthony and St. Macrina did not receive the Eucharist at the end of their terrestrial...

The author tries to find a possible basis for spiritual dialogue between the Church and today's Czech young people. In the first part he places the religiousness of the youth into a broader geographical and historical context. He focuses on the present reality in the Czech Republic and finds out that young people here are extremely atheistic in comparison with the youth in other European countries. At the same time, a lot of them admit that there exist some phenomena which are not possible to explain by scientific reasons. That is why the author pays special attention to the phenomenon of atheism among Czech youth. In the Czech setting we can also...

Bohuslav Spáčil SJ, a professor of the Pontifical Oriental Institute in Rome, has written a three-part book of contemplation for priests entitled Psallite regi nostro. The third part of the book was considered to be lost because the communist dictatorship in 1948 destroyed its letter board in the printing office and precluded its publication. Thanks to the courage of a printer, Josef Tichý, one copy of the book was saved. It is now in the library of Centrum Aletti in Olomouc.
