Sophia and Christ: The Connection in Pauline Theology?

Personified wisdom, which is part of wisdom literature (Prov, Sir, Wis), has been historically linked to the understanding of Jesus in Paul’s undisputed letters. This connection was eventually denied. The aim of this article is to examine the related textual passages, the associated interpretations of prominent scholars, and to answer the question: Why does the apostle Paul not use the concept of σοφία in connection with Jesus? The answer is found in Paul’s apocalyptic thinking and in the figure of the New Adam. The figure of Wisdom is relevant only in a harmonious world that is not radically corrupt, as described in Paul’s apocalyptic eschatology. The New Adam, unlike Wisdom, represents an eschatological figure and therefore can reverse the unfavourable fate of human history. As will also be pointed out, apocalyptic literature works with the ideals of wisdom literature, and therefore it can be argued that the New Adam represents an apocalyptic version of Wisdom. This contribution is based on historical criticism, literary and semantic analysis.
